People are usually driven by something. What are you driven by? The most common motive is fear. Regardless of the cause, fear-driven people often miss opportunities because they are afraid to venture out of their comfort zone. Fear will keep you from becoming what God intends for you to be. "Well formed love banishes fear." 1John4:18 (MSG)
Some driving forces are guilt, resentment and anger, materialism, and a need for approval. Guilt will cause you to run from regrets. Resentment and anger will cause people to either clam-up or blow-up, neither are healthy or helpful. Resentment and anger allows you to stew in your pain, it hurts you more than the one causing the pain. The Bible says, "For wrath kills the foolish man, and envy slays the silly one." Job 5:2(KJV) Then there is the feeling of the need of approval; driven by others opinion is a guaranteed way to miss God's purpose for your life. "No one can serve two masters." Matthew 6:24(KJV)
There are other driven forces in life that will lead you to the same dead-end. But I would like to talk about the motive that leads to success, "A Purpose". Knowing your purpose gives meaning to life. It will simplify and motivate your life. Best of all, it will prepare you for eternity.
We were made to have meaning, life becomes unbearable without it. It gives us something to focus on. "For everything, absolutely everything, above and below, visible and invisible, ... everything got started in him and finds its purpose in him." Colossians 1:16 (MSG) It all starts with God. We were made for God, not vice verse, and life is about allowing God to use you for his purpose.
The easiest way to discover your life's purpose is to ask the Creator, Himself. God is the source of life. To discover the purpose of your life you should turn to God's Word, not the world's wisdom. Ephesians 1:11(KJV) tells us, "... being predestinated according to the purpose of him who works all things after the counsel of his own will." You see, each and everyone of our lives fit into a much larger, cosmic purpose that God has designed for eternity. God is success!
So I ask again, "What is your Motive for Success?"

The man without a purpose is like a ship without a rudder.
